Guadeloupe – Cheap Eats

Top Local
“Top Local located in Sainte Anne (near the colorful market), offers small Creole dishes. The cuisine of the chef is very creative, his specialty is the conch grilled in a Raisin tree leaf! Quantities are limited, this dish is available on a first-come, first-served basis.” – Guadeloupe-islands.com

Couleurs Du Monde
“This fun, colorful waterfront café offers free Wi-Fi, books and newspapers to read, teas and coffees, wine, and icy rum cocktails, all of which encourage lounging. Appetizers include sushi and smoked-fish plates, while the catch of the day with an exotic sauce is usually a good choice. After sunset there are aperitifs, and although reservations are requested for dinner, the friendly, accommodating staff also takes walk-ins. Finish off with the house-made punch du monde. This is one of the few island restaurants that does not close between lunch and dinner. To get here from the main dock, take a left to the main street and walk two blocks. It’s across from the kayak-rental company.” – Fodors.com

Chez Henri
” This hip place on the water, flanked by the town pier, is named for its passionate chef-owner, Henri Vergerolle, an island character who spent much of his life in France but returned to open this restaurant and cultural center. Begin with a rum and fresh-squeezed juice. Smoked fish can be a component of a salad or an appetizer; the creole omelet is also very original. Everything is fresh here, but the limited menu might have only three main courses available (you can always choose the fish of the day). But just kick back and listen to African blues and view the latest art or sculpture exhibits. You might have the good luck to be here when there’s a live music concert.” – Fodors.com

Le Touloulou Le Restaurant
“On the curve of Plage de Petite-Anse, this casual hotel restaurant has tables in the sand, stylish Euro decor, and the freshest, most delicious seafood. Chef José Viator does wonders with fish carpaccio; ouassous (jumbo crayfish) in coconut sauce; bébélé (a flavorful creole dish with tripe and dumplings); and fricassee of conch or octopus with breadfruit. Set menus are the best value at both lunch and dinner. On weekends, the Creole Brunch from 11 to 4 is particularly celebratory; on weekend nights there’s entertainment or dancing. Pergola’s, the circular bar, has some of the island’s best rum cocktails.” – Fodorschoice.com
